Protect your eyes this Firework night

As Firework night approaches, independent opticians across the UK are urging people to protect their eyes from the bright lights and burning Guy Fawkes’.

Coming together as part of the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician Campaign, undertaken by the Sight Care Group, independent opticians are advising all eager firework fans to protect their eyes this sparkling season.

Research* shows that each year approximately 300 eye injuries are caused by fireworks and an average of ten people lose their sight due to firework related injuries, half of those wounded are children.

Paul Surridge, a spokesman for the Eye Love My Local Independent Optician Campaign, said: “The number of eye injuries that occur at this time of year jumps dramatically, our member opticians are advising everyone wanting to enjoy the season’s fun to take extra care of their eyes.”

The dangers of fireworks, the facts:
• Sparklers get five times hotter than cooking oil.
• A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph.
• Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat as a blowtorch.
• The majority of firework-related injuries happen at family or private parties.
• Around half of all injuries are to children under the age of 17.
• The most common injuries are to hands, followed by the eyes and face.

"The atmosphere, range of designer frames and the high levels of service at Wendy Diddams changed the way I viewed going to the opticians. By using an independent I have found that I don’t have to hang around waiting for ages and I also have never had an appointment cancelled since being with Wendy."

Naomi Wellman, from Knutsford, patient at Wendy Diddams Optometrist
